事实上，有这样一条规则：
当主语从句是由what引导的，而且谓语动词是连系动词尤其是be动词时，不能用it作形式主语，并且将主语从句后置。
e.g.: What you said was/seemed/appeared true.(correct)
It was/seemed/appeared true what you said.(wrong)
通过以下一题也可说明此规则的正确。
It is your ability ______ matters. A) what B) that
答案为B，此题是一个强调句。如果无上述的语法规则，那么A也无错误之处了。
另外，还有：
当主语和表语同为动词不定式、动名词或名词性从句时，不能用it作形式主语，并且将词不定式、动名词或名词性从句后置。
e.g.: To live is to struggle.(correct)
It is to struggle to live./It is to live to struggle.(wrong)
Seeing is believing.(correct)
It is believing seeing./It is seeing believing.(wrong)
