Primary Data Collection Problems of Primary Data Collection An alternative to secondary data is primary data collection. Primary data presumably provide more relevant information because they are collected specifically for the purpose in mind. However, the collection of primary data is an expensive proposition in terms of both money and time. Thus, the underlying purpose must justify the effort. For example, when a company has to make a decision about appointing a dealer for the occasional sale of its product in a developing country, it is not necessary to have primary data on the longterm market potential. On the other hand, if the company is considering the establishment of a manufacturing plant in the country, it may be important to undertake a market-potential study. Primary data collection in a foreign environment poses a variety of problems not encountered in the United States. These problems are related to social and cultural factors and the level of economic development.
